So I have been looking for somewhere fun to take the kids to for a while. It’s difficult because you can’t just take your kids out of school anymore, without being slapped with a huge fine and then the prices for holidays go up on school term. How unreasonable!!!
Anyway, we were looking for somewhere close by, where we could take the kids away for a weekend without interfering with school. And while we thought pontins was going to be expensive it turned out to be pretty cheap, and only an hour train ride from where we live so was easy to get back for school on Monday.
Is Pontins Really That Bad?
Looking at the reviews pontins has some pretty bad ones, and have not come across a good one yet! There has even been a documentary about the uncleanliness of the place, but that was years ago so surely they have got their act together now.
Do you think maybe I am just lucky? Am I am blind to the bad? Or am super positive and don’t see the bad in anything? As I read bad reviews on most places I visit and have never had a problem with any of them.
Read what we thought of pontins, the things you need to know before visiting and the activities available.
What You Need To Know About The Chalet
We rented out a chalet for four of us which came to £45. We only went for one night as we didn’t know what pontins would be like (given the bad reviews!)
But the chalet was nice and basic, with two beds and a sofa bed which was a double. It was very clean and tidy. The only problem was that the beds came with no linen. You had to purchase the linen from reception. So it’s recommended to just take your own bed sheets. Also bring your own towels, Pontins don’t provide these free of charge.
Night Entertainment, Perfect
So we arrived on Friday night and settled down to a night of entertainment, Which was great, we enjoyed the tribute bands such as One Direction, Boyzlife, Boomin and then a late night disco.
There were many kids dancing up front and having a good time, but my kids were not interested in the entertainment and went to the arcade which was next door. Perfect for them.
The arcade gives out tokens which you can collect and once you have enough tokens you can exchange them for a toy at the arcade shop. So £10 each kept them entertained for hours. They loved it.
Day Time Activities
Pontins have something for everyone, and has a wide range of activities. We went on a weekend so some events such as the character breakfast were not available. So I guess if you went in the term-time there would be more things to do, but higher costs and a busier time, meaning queue time could be longer.
Swimming and pool games
Outdoor Play areas
When you check out you can leave your suitcases at the reception area, so you have all day to explore Pontins. It is at your own risk though as anyone could walk by and take your luggage, so make sure not to leave any valuables in there if you do this.
The first thing we did was go swimming. The pool is free and they give you a colored wrist band. You are only allowed in the pool for an hour and the lifeguards shout out your color when your time is up.
Next we played a bit of mini golf. You hire out the balls and clubs and leave a £5 deposit which you get back at the end.
They also went on this super cool racing track. You need tokens for this. So we had to purchase 3 tokens each. A token is worth £1. So was £3 for each child to race.
But after the race course the kids were eager to get back to the arcade.
They have a Saturday daytime entertainment also, so we sat and watched a Taylor Swift tribute band and we also go to watch Donchez Dacres who was on Britain s got talent. So in all we had a good time.
The Food Could Have Been Better…
The food was OK I guess. Not a lot of healthy options if you like to watch your weight or just enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Full of greasy burgers, chips and kebabs.
They do have a restaurant where you can have an all you can eat breakfast and an evening three course evening meal. We had an all you can eat breakfast which was your usual full English breakfast
The restaurant prices were good. For an all you can eat breakfast is £6.95 per adult and £3.95 per child.
To sum pontins up – it was clean, tidy, the kids had a blast of a time and the entertainment was great.
Pontins is only suitable for a weekend away. 3 days max. Otherwise, I think kids will get bored after that.
